Humility—freedom from pride and arrogance; a modest estimate of one’s own worth; submission to the divine will. If there is anything that we have lost in our culture, it is humility. Check all the titles in the “self-help” section of a bookstore, and you’ll never see a book about humility. Most of our “Christian” authors today are writing books about how to be great, and how to have a better life, but humility and the humble life seem to have been forgotten or swept under the rug.
Truly, it is no surprise when the world forgets about humility, the world is all about who’s the best, strongest, prettiest. The world’s motto seems to tell us that pride is ok and even something to be celebrated. When is the last time you saw someone accept an award and say, “I really don’t deserve this award…”? But the saddest thing is that now in our churches we have forgotten about humility! How many verses are in the Bible that tell us the necessity of humility? A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. (Proverbs 29:23) A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. (Isaiah 57:15) …but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. (Isaiah 66:2) For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (Luke 14:11)
One of the most amazing examples in the Bible about the power of humility has to be in the life of Ahab. In 1 Kings 21, the Bible records that there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord. Because of his wickedness, God pronounced judgment on Ahab and on his house. But when Ahab heard what God had to say, verse 27 records what Ahab’s response was. “And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.” What is the power of humility? When God saw Ahab’s response, God postponed His judgment! God actually asked Elijah if he had noticed how Ahab had humbled himself. Amazing!
